Community and Public

The Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation and the larger SCBI considers itself an important member of the local community in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, and the nearby town of Front Royal. As the programs within the SMSC expand, the local community will be increasingly engaged in the School’s science, research and training activities.

The SCBI has already paved the way forward with its Virginia Working Landscapes program, which works with local landowners to improve and restore native grasslands in the area and monitor their biodiversity. SCBI also hosts a community lecture series each spring and fall which has been hugely popular, and we envision expanding our own SMSC programs to include more workshops and conferences geared toward local populations and local issues in sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
